Why PBS/MPS

Why This Work Exists, What It Asks, and Where It Stops

A bounded case for preserving economically material contribution evidence before law, markets, regulators, or institutions decide what consequence, if any, should follow.

01 · Why this work exists

The problem is institutional amnesia.

Artificial intelligence and intangible production can preserve the commercial value of human contribution while allowing the evidentiary history of that contribution to disappear. Once the evidence disappears, no later institution can fairly determine whether recognition, ownership, compensation, restitution, or no additional consequence should follow.

That is the reason for the project. Everything else is architecture.

02 · Minimum claim

Contribution evidence before entitlement.

The minimum claim is not that every contribution should become property. It is that materially important contribution evidence should not be allowed to disappear before legitimate institutions have decided what, if anything, follows from it.

The framework therefore separates evidence from consequence. A record can exist without a performance claim. Performance can be measured without reliable attribution. Attribution can be estimated without creating ownership. Entitlement requires an independent legal, contractual, moral, regulatory, or governance warrant.

Stage 1Provenance

What happened, who participated, and what evidence supports the record?

Stage 2Performance

What observable outcome occurred, and under what measurement conditions?

Stage 3Attribution / Allocation

How do recorded inputs relate to outcomes, with what uncertainty?

Stage 4Entitlement / Payment

What valid rule, if any, creates an enforceable consequence?

03 · What is being asked

Different professions should test different parts of the claim.

The immediate request is not universal adoption. It is disciplined investigation through bounded, contestable, independently evaluated work.

For legislators

Authorize a bounded demonstration in a domain with identifiable contributions, observable outcomes, manageable privacy risks, meaningful correction rights, independent evaluation, and a statutory expiration date. Do not create automatic ownership or royalties before the evidence supports them.

For economists

Test whether credible contribution records reduce verification, contracting, bargaining, dispute, licensing, financing, or misallocation costs by more than the institution costs to operate.

For technologists

Build the smallest provenance system capable of preserving relevant evidence, status, uncertainty, correction, and lawful use without turning the contributor into a continuously scored object.

For independent farmers and breeders

Test whether verified lineage and field-performance records improve access to licensing, financing, negotiation, and market alternatives without requiring the breeder to surrender the underlying contribution.

04 · Falsifiability

What would prove the case wrong?

PBS/MPS should be rejected, narrowed, or replaced when any of these conditions defeats the institutional case.

  1. Contribution cannot be identified reliably.
  2. Performance lacks a valid baseline.
  3. Attribution cannot rise above speculative inference.
  4. Existing institutions solve the problem more cheaply.
  5. Administration costs more than the information is worth.
  6. Contributors cannot correct or contest consequential records.
  7. Privacy and surveillance risks cannot be controlled.
  8. Metrics produce more gaming than useful information.
  9. The proposed remedy exceeds the confidence of the evidence.
  10. An independently evaluated pilot produces no material improvement over existing arrangements.

05 · Stopping rule

The work is attached to a problem, not a product.

I will stop advocating a particular PBS/MPS implementation when independent evidence shows that it does not improve decisions, bargaining, licensing, attribution, or dispute resolution enough to justify its cost and risk.

I will also stop when a simpler institution solves the same problem more safely and effectively. The objective is not to preserve PBS/MPS as a brand or technology. The objective is to prevent economically material contribution history from disappearing before society can judge its significance.

If that objective can be met without tokens, without blockchain, without a new security, or without PBS/MPS, that is a successful outcome.

The broader work ends when contribution evidence has a credible institutional home, or when rigorous testing establishes that such a home would do more harm than good.

The bounded case

Remember responsibly. Test honestly. Stop when the evidence says to stop.

PBS/MPS is not a demand that every contribution be owned, priced, or paid. It is a demand that society stop allowing economically consequential histories of human contribution to disappear by default. The immediate task is to preserve credible and contestable evidence. The next task is to measure outcomes and estimate attribution honestly. Only then may law, contract, markets, regulation, or democratic judgment decide what follows. If the evidence supports no further consequence, the sequence stops. If the institution costs more than the blindness it corrects, the experiment stops. If a simpler system works better, PBS/MPS gives way to it. The project exists to solve institutional amnesia, not to perpetuate itself.

Research basis

  • Evidence Before Entitlement: provenance as governed economic memory; evidence and entitlement remain separate.
  • The Economics of Institutional Memory: provenance is warranted only when its economic benefit exceeds its full institutional cost.
  • Markets Need Memory: bounded pilots, independent replication, refusal criteria, and explicit stopping rules.
  • The Rights of the Recorded Contributor: notice, access, correction, contestation, privacy, appeal, exit, and anti-retaliation as conditions of legitimate provenance governance.
  • PBS policy and agricultural work: seed genetics as a proposed domain for empirical testing of documented lineage, performance evidence, licensing, and market access.
